Home wine tasting

Learning to taste isn't just for workshops or vineyard tours! Whether you're an amateur, a connoisseur, or an experienced enthusiast, the world of wine is vast and requires years of learning. So why not start your wine tasting journey with your own cellar? The goal is to better choose your bottles, structure your tastings, and keep track of what you enjoy.

Enjoying your cellar at home

At home, you control the pace, the atmosphere, and most importantly, the wines served. The question isn't just "open a good bottle," but "open the right bottle, at the right time." You need to know which vintages are ready, which ones to wait for, and which ones to highlight during a tasting.

Oeni helps answer these questions: track the evolution of your wines, identify those ready for drinking, and avoid forgetting bottles at the back of your cellar. Each opening becomes a somewhat structured tasting, rather than an improvised act.

Hosting a wine tasting at home

Choose a theme

A theme clarifies the tasting and makes comparisons easier; here are a few examples:

• Color : white wines, red wines, sparkling wines.
• Region : Burgundy, Loire, Rhône, etc.
• Grape variety : Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Syrah, etc.
• Vintage : several years of the same wine.
• Style : fresh wines, cellar-worthy wines, natural wines…

Select the bottles

Once you have chosen your lineup, your selection will depend not only on style but also on maturity, particularly by identifying which wines are ready to drink. Also, consider limiting your selection to 3 to 6 wines depending on the number of guests.

Oeni’s aging information helps you decide what to open now and what to keep aging.

Organizing service order and conditions

Just as with food and wine pairing in gastronomy, the order of service plays an important role. It is the key to fully appreciating each of the wines presented.

Rules such as starting with the lightest wine and finishing with the most full-bodied, as well as serving young wines before moving on to more mature ones, or progressing from dry to sweet wines.

Oeni’s wine profiles (style, aging potential, maturity, recommended temperature) serve as a guide for determining the serving order and preparing the bottles.

Simple tasting method

Our advice: focus on harmony and enjoyment, rather than trying to impress with specific wine terminology. Above all, it should remain a convivial moment!

The three stages. The art of tasting begins with a sensory analysis:

Appearance

Color, intensity, clarity, hues: indicator of age and style

Nose

Before and after aeration: aroma families (fruits, flowers, spices, wood, mineral notes…).

Palate

Attack, body, finish, balance between freshness, tannins, alcohol, and potential sweetness.

Taking useful
notes

To improve your palate and knowledge, one of the best practices is taking notes. This way, you'll remember the wines and refine your tastes.

To help you keep track, we recommend adding some notes about the context before adding your appreciation. This could be a rating, a few notes, or 2-3 words about the analysis (nose, palate).

Oeni allows you to record these impressions directly on each bottle's profile (rating, comment, photo), and easily find the wines you enjoyed.
